Can You Grow Organically in Hydroponics, Soil & Coco? Let's Dig In!

Hey Green Thumbs of Liverpool and beyond! 🌱

Welcome back to The Green Corner, your favourite spot for all things hydroponics and growing, right here in the UK! Today, we’re tackling a super popular question: can we grow our delicious plants organically, no matter if we're using soil, coco coir, or even fancy hydroponics?

It’s a great question because 'organic' often makes us think of lovely, traditional farms. But what about our modern growing methods? Let's find out!

What Does 'Organic' Really Mean?

Imagine your grandma's garden – full of buzzing bees and happy worms, with no yucky chemicals. That’s the spirit of organic! It means growing plants using natural methods and products that are kind to the earth, the bugs, and us! In the UK, there are even special rules and certifications for things to be called truly "organic."

Growing in Soil: The Original Organic!

When we think organic, soil is usually the first thing that pops into our heads. And for good reason!

  • Is it naturally organic? YES! If you’re using good quality, natural soil from your garden or a reputable supplier, you’re off to a brilliant start.

  • How to keep it organic:

    • Compost is your best friend: Adding homemade compost or organic compost from the garden centre makes your soil super happy and full of food for your plants.

    • Organic fertilisers: Instead of chemical feeds, use natural plant foods like seaweed extract, fish emulsion, or well-rotted manure.

    • Pest patrol (naturally!): Attract helpful bugs like ladybirds to eat the munching pests, or use natural sprays made from things like neem oil.

  • What to avoid: Synthetic fertilisers (the blue or green crystals that dissolve easily), chemical pesticides, and herbicides.

Growing in Coco Coir: A Bit Different, But Still Possible!

Coco coir is made from coconut husks, and it’s become super popular, especially for hydroponics and even in pots. It’s a bit like a super fluffy, neutral soil.

  • Is it naturally organic? The coco itself is a natural product, but it doesn't have much natural food in it, unlike rich soil. So, we need to add things to make it organic.

  • How to keep it organic:

    • Organic nutrients: Just like with soil, you'll need organic-certified liquid feeds designed for coco coir. Look for brands that are approved for organic growing.

    • Beneficial microbes: Adding helpful bacteria and fungi to your coco can break down organic nutrients, making them easier for your plants to eat. It’s like giving your plant's tummy extra helpers!

    • Natural pest control: Again, neem oil or encouraging good bugs works wonders.

  • What to avoid: Just like with soil, steer clear of synthetic (chemical) fertilisers and harsh pesticides.

Growing in Hydroponics: The Biggest Challenge, But Totally Doable!

Ah, hydroponics – growing plants in water without soil! This is where 'organic' gets really interesting. Many people think hydroponics can't be organic, but guess what? They’re wrong!

  • Is it naturally organic? Hydroponics itself isn't organic or inorganic; it's just a method. But making it organic means being extra careful with what you put in the water.

  • How to keep it organic (the clever bit!):

    • Organic hydroponic nutrients: This is key! You need special liquid nutrients that are made from natural sources and are designed to dissolve properly in water without clogging your system. It's a bit trickier than with soil, but fantastic organic hydro feeds are available in the UK now.

    • Root health is vital: In organic hydroponics, it's super important to keep your water and roots clean and healthy. Good aeration (lots of bubbles!) and beneficial bacteria help a lot.

    • Growing media: If you use a medium in your hydroponic system (like rockwool, clay pebbles, or even some coco), ensure it's clean and suitable for organic use. Clay pebbles (LECA) are a great choice as they are inert.

    • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): This is just a fancy name for using natural ways to keep pests away. Think sticky traps or introducing predatory mites.

  • What to avoid: ALL standard synthetic hydroponic nutrients. These are usually salt-based and will upset the balance in an organic system. Also, avoid chemical cleaning agents for your system; use natural alternatives if needed.

Key Products for Organic Growing (and What to Dodge!)

Your Organic Shopping List:

  • Certified Organic Compost/Potting Mix: For soil growers.

  • Organic Coco Coir: Check it’s RHP certified for quality.

  • Organic Liquid Nutrients: Look for "organic certified" on the bottle, suitable for your growing method (soil, coco, or hydro). Brands like Biobizz, Canna Bio, or Growth Technology's Organic range are good starting points for UK growers.

  • Seaweed Extract: A natural plant tonic.

  • Worm Castings: Incredible natural fertiliser for soil and coco.

  • Neem Oil: A natural pest deterrent.

  • Beneficial Microbes/Bacteria: Products like Ecothrive Biosys or those containing mycorrhizal fungi.

Products to Gently Step Away From:

  • Synthetic Mineral Fertilisers: The bright blue or green stuff.

  • Chemical Pesticides and Herbicides: Nasty for nature and your plants!

  • Strong Chemical pH Down/Up: Often, an organic system will naturally balance its pH better, or you can use gentler, natural alternatives like citric acid.

So, Can You Grow Organically?

Absolutely! Whether you're a traditional soil gardener, love the versatility of coco coir, or are diving into the exciting world of UK hydroponics, you can definitely grow your plants organically. It takes a little more thought and choosing the right organic growing products, but the reward is plants that are happy, healthy, and full of natural goodness.
